Name of the bike: Soma Buena Vista, “The Sofa” 

History of the bike: This bike came to us as a donation pickup from Contes Bike Shop in DC. A local customer reached out to Contes and one of the employees went and picked up the donations from them. The original owner of this bike has acquired quite a collection of quirky custom bikes and was willing to let this one go. This bike came with three gears in the front and one in the back. 

Reason behind the build: After seeing the bike for the first time, it was clear that the frame was in pristine condition and would eventually be a very comfortable ride. This frame was a clear choice to be converted into a more modern hybrid.  

Unexpected building challenges: The rear wheel could only take an individual cog, which prevented the ability for a range of gears so we decided to replace the rear wheel to add a cassette. If we had kept the original front wheel on the bike it would've been unmatched, so we chose to replace the front wheel as well. To enhance the comfort of this bike, we converted the tires to tubeless, which was difficult. The tires went on easily, but once they were on they leaked air, which was remediated by adding sealant until they were finally airtight. 

Our favorite thing about the bike: The best thing about this bike is its comfort. The steel frame and tubeless tires combine to make a very smooth ride. 

Future plans: This bike was sold at Phoenix Bikes and is ready for its next adventure
